HINT: Your NWM Company or Affiliate Offer is NOT Your Business

There’s this mistake that people who join a company as a rep or consultant make … and this same mistake is made by affiliates who choose one product to sell.

And they all make it pretty consistently.

In their minds they lead themselves to believe that their opportunity = their business.


How many times have you heard people say “my Avon business this”, “my Talk Fusion business” or my “Mary Kay business that”

“I’m building my Melaleuca, MLSP, Body by Vi, Pre-paid Legal (or whatever they’ve reinvented themselves as … Legalzoom? lol), Amway,  Empower Network, Net Divvy,7 Figure Networker, Numis, Usana, Mia Bella, MyVideoTalk, Scentsy, Vitamark, Send Out Cards, Market America, Arbonne, MPBToday, Shaklee, Beachbody, Monavie, insert your company here business.”

OMG the list goes on and on, doesn’t it??

And to be honest – it’s really not our fault.

The companies themselves promote their distributorships and IBO relationships this way. I mean they say it out loud …

“Start your ___________ business today!”

I bet that’s on just about every direct selling, Network Marketing, MLM and Marketing system’s website … encouraging you to hop on board and “join the team”.

But here’s the problem.

Those companies aren’t actually the “business” of anyone except those on the corporate team.

They pay us commissions. As Independent contractors.

But the business itself is not ours.

Let me show you what I mean…

Do you own stock as a major shareholder?

Can you make business decisions for that company?

IF they let you trademark/register a business name with their name in it – THAT business would be yours.

But they’re not about to allow that, right?

And your business would still not be THE business …

…I mean you wouldn’t have bank account access or anything.

See what I mean?
These business associations are income centers (or at least that’s the idea – whether you ever get into profit and why so many never do is another topic for another day) but they are NOT our business.

So how can we shift our minds and out brands to a place where we can leverage the good stuff that the company has to offer (typically this is mostly about the product line – and also the pay plan … ideally excellence on both fronts is what you’ve aligned yourself with) …

But yet establish a real business for ourselves. One that we can build up over time without the fear of any outside entity having a say about how we develop our own asset?

Well the answer is pretty simple.

And I’ll reveal that in a minute (if you haven’t already guessed at the punchline – grin) …

But first, I want to share something that I wrote and posted on my very first blog (a blogger blog :-o!) way back in 2005.

You’ll see nothing has changed.  Except *maybe* I’m a better writer these days ;-)

On Becoming the ‘GoTo’ Guy

Become the ‘GoTo’ Guy [or gal]

For years we’ve been taught to identify ourselves as reps for one XYZ company or another.

  • We have our fancy business cards printed, some letterhead, maybe an address stamp.
  • We use the company logo and replicated websites as points of first impression.
  • We market ourselves as being associated with that company with abandon … heck, we even have the T-shirts to prove it!

Sounds okay on the surface, right?

Not right.

Think Like the CEO That You Are

Dedicating your personal image might be okay (or even required!) when you’re on salary with some company. After all, when you trade your time for money, they do get to call the shots when you’re on the clock, don’t they.

Sometimes a job can even have a say in how you’re dressing or acting in your off hours … all too common.

But what I don’t get is why people, who join Network Marketing companies as independent distributors, feel the need to associate their very being as an XYZ distributor.

Why the rush to be labeled as a part of that company?!
Are we not CEOs and chief bottle washers of our own businesses?

If you think about it, it’s really only to the company’s benefit for you to parade around in company promotional garb and paying for your own ‘official’ business documents to be printed.

Learn to Brand Yourself

Become the ‘GoTo’ guy for your chosen product or service type.

  • Promote an image of expertise in a field rather than just another distributor among many.
  • Don’t marry yourself to any one company … leave your options open.
  • Make every marketing effort that you put forth something that you can benefit from for a lifetime.

By branding yourself, you build that needed ‘know, like and trust’ that makes sales easiest. You become associated in the minds of the people you are working with as THE person to go to when they’re wanting what you’ve got.

To your success!

See what I mean? I’ve been preaching this stuff for a mighty long time :)

So of course the answer is – over time – develop your own brand identity.

BE the Independent Business Owner … the free agent … the focused action taker … the problem see-er AND the problem solver … the outside of the box thinker and collaborator.

Continuously train and tone your Entrepreneurial mind and muscles – THIS is what will allow you to build an asset for YOU. One that will afford you every possible luxury and want in your life and lifestyle if you do it right.

Will you be successful? How long will it take?

Hard to say.

It’s really up to you. And the actions you take. Who you listen to and let yourself be influenced by.

But I do know one thing, once you decide to wear that hat and you commit to it – gladly embracing whatever personal development and skill building is required to get there…. and connecting with mentors, coaches and mastermind groups along the way (this is critical)…

You’ll get there.
